5
00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:30.079
McMahon nant. Hello, and welcome
to pop Culture Weekly with Kyle MCMANI of

6
00:00:30.120 --> 00:00:37.799
course m Kyle McMahon, and this
episode is all about Apple TV plus is

7
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:45.079
the Crowded Room. I can't say
enough about this limited series. It is

8
00:00:45.679 --> 00:00:54.799
really really powerful, really incredible.
It's thriller, it's tight, it's intriguing,

9
00:00:55.079 --> 00:01:00.840
it's deep. It centers around Tom
Holland, who It takes place in

10
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:07.719
Manhattan in nineteen seventy nine and Tom
Holland is arrested for a crime and then

11
00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:15.599
an investigator is trying to solve the
mystery behind it. Amanda Cifred plays the

12
00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:21.400
investigator. Tom Holland is the man
you know, a thought to do this

13
00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:29.439
crime. It is really really really
good. Again, I can't stress enough

14
00:01:29.959 --> 00:01:36.200
how good this is. I can't
really say too much because it's very twisty

15
00:01:36.599 --> 00:01:40.400
and I don't want to give you
any spoilers. To be honest, I

16
00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:42.519
just want you to go in and
love it as much as I did.

17
00:01:44.159 --> 00:01:49.480
Do yourself a favor. Don't look
up spoilers, you know, enjoy the

18
00:01:49.640 --> 00:01:53.239
series for how it's meant to be, you know, going cold it is,

19
00:01:53.640 --> 00:01:57.719
well, it will be well worth
it that way. So, having

20
00:01:57.719 --> 00:02:01.200
said that, on last the last
episode, I was at the red carpet

21
00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:07.959
premiere of the crowded room at the
Museum of Modern Art. I'm really upset

22
00:02:07.120 --> 00:02:10.680
because so I interviewed, you know, most of the cast and Amanda and

23
00:02:12.520 --> 00:02:15.759
Tom Holland I was next to interview
him, and then he got done with

24
00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:20.439
the person right next to me while
I was still interviewing Amanda and so as

25
00:02:20.479 --> 00:02:23.360
publicist, which I totally get,
you don't want I'm just standing around,

26
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:24.520
but as publicist, was like,
all right, well let's go in,

27
00:02:24.759 --> 00:02:30.360
and I'm like, I dude,
I'm next, and I'm last. I'm

28
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:34.199
the last person he has to talk
to. So I missed my interview with

29
00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:37.360
Tom, but that's okay, Well
we'll get him for the next project,

30
00:02:37.960 --> 00:02:40.159
you know. So those were my
stand up interviews at at on the red

31
00:02:40.199 --> 00:02:45.800
carpet. Today is my sit down
interviews, So I talk with Amanda Cifred

32
00:02:46.280 --> 00:02:50.639
and Sasha Lane. Amanda, of
course, you know, I've talked to

33
00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:55.280
her before, and she's an incredible
actress, Emmy winner, Oscar nominated,

34
00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:02.120
really really incredible actress. I also
talk with Sasha Lane, who Sasha you

35
00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:09.400
may know from Loki where she played
Hunter C twenty in season one of Loki

36
00:03:09.479 --> 00:03:16.199
in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and
she was in Daniel Isn't Real and Amazing

37
00:03:16.280 --> 00:03:22.680
Stories and really cool. She was
also in a Hellboy the twenty nineteen one

38
00:03:22.759 --> 00:03:29.759
and she's just a really great actress, really cool person, and I'm really

39
00:03:30.520 --> 00:03:34.080
glad to talk to her again.
You know, I'm trying not to do

40
00:03:34.120 --> 00:03:38.840
any spoilers in these interviews, so
it's like difficult, you know what I

41
00:03:38.840 --> 00:03:42.919
mean, because I want you,
guys to when you're watching, I want

42
00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:46.280
you to I don't want you to
listen to the show, my show,

43
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:49.520
this show that you're listening to now
and then be like, oh man,

44
00:03:49.879 --> 00:03:53.039
well now I know that part because
this is it's very important to the series

45
00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:58.599
that you not know anything. So
without further ado, let's just get right

46
00:03:58.599 --> 00:04:04.159
into it. Let's let's start with
my interview with Sasha lay. So this

47
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:11.000
series is extremely powerful. It's riveting, edge of your seat. I really

48
00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:15.720
really love it. For you,
what attracted you to the project? I

49
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:21.120
think I'm I've always been a big
fan of psychological thrillers. I love a

50
00:04:21.160 --> 00:04:27.360
good like puzzle piece. I also
really love the emotional aspects to it,

51
00:04:28.439 --> 00:04:32.000
you know, about compassion and healing
and all of that. So it's just

52
00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:38.199
kind of like an instant yes for
me, m and for you. You

53
00:04:38.199 --> 00:04:41.600
know, as I was, you
know, watching, I kind of was

54
00:04:41.639 --> 00:04:45.160
thinking of the you know, the
filmmakers and the cast and all. I

55
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:48.120
feel like you would need a chart
to kind of have it all, you

56
00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:54.439
know, laid out before you as
you're filming. Were you only getting the

57
00:04:54.519 --> 00:04:57.879
parts that you needed or were you
able to kind of see the whole picture

58
00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:02.439
before you went into shooting? Like, do you mean if I got the

59
00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:08.959
full script or if I was kind
of able to focus on everyone else's Yeah,

60
00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.240
exactly, Like did you get the
full script so you could kind of

61
00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:16.600
get the whole picture of who your
character is in this bigger picture? Yeah?

62
00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:20.800
I think a little bit before we
went into production, they were kind

63
00:05:20.839 --> 00:05:25.839
of gradually handing out the episodes because
they were still tweaking them a little bit,

64
00:05:26.360 --> 00:05:31.160
so it was almost like a discovery
of my own character as I was

65
00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:36.639
waiting to start, But it was
it was nice to be able to then,

66
00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:41.600
It's nice to be able to get
the full concept. Obviously I was

67
00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:45.279
a fan of it, so I
wanted to read it myself. But then

68
00:05:45.959 --> 00:05:49.920
because there's so many like separate parts
to it, in separate kind of groups

69
00:05:49.959 --> 00:05:56.720
of characters, I've then just kind
of zeroed in on my world and who

70
00:05:56.759 --> 00:06:00.279
I interacted with. And how is
that for you? How are you able

71
00:06:00.360 --> 00:06:04.639
to kind of to kind of do
that where I mean, obviously you're an

72
00:06:04.639 --> 00:06:10.079
actor, you're a pro, but
you know, mentally, how are you

73
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:15.920
able to kind of separate yourself from
this broader picture and bring what you want

74
00:06:15.959 --> 00:06:23.000
to bring to her? I think, I guess it's kind of how you

75
00:06:23.079 --> 00:06:28.639
might just function in everyday life of
Okay, I know my end goal is

76
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:33.560
here and this is what this world
could look like, But I'm focusing on

77
00:06:33.639 --> 00:06:38.319
today because that's what's important, is
right now, Versus if I started thinking

78
00:06:38.360 --> 00:06:41.920
about the weekend, then it's all
going to get consumed and you know,

79
00:06:41.959 --> 00:06:46.399
you won't be able to like focus
as deep. So for me, the

80
00:06:46.439 --> 00:06:49.720
rest of the story almost doesn't matter, especially if I'm not meeting them or

81
00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:57.360
if I'm not that has nothing to
do with what I'm doing today in terms

82
00:06:57.399 --> 00:07:00.480
of what Arianna is doing that day. You know, so I think it

83
00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:03.959
it's probably a little bit easier than
it sounds, I guess, at least

84
00:07:03.959 --> 00:07:09.240
for me. I like to kind
of zero in on something. I love

85
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:13.759
that, and that's actually a great, great kind of take home for all

86
00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:15.680
of our lives. We could just
focus on, you know, right here,

87
00:07:15.800 --> 00:07:20.160
right now, we won't have to
get anxiety about tomorrow or what maybe

88
00:07:20.199 --> 00:07:24.040
Ina. I think it's a good
thing with you know, a person who

89
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:27.600
struggles with anxiety. It does help
me to be like I, that's not

90
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:30.879
even happening yet, there's no point, and she's going to stress me out

91
00:07:30.920 --> 00:07:34.360
for no reason when this is what
my and I'm being a mom too.

92
00:07:34.399 --> 00:07:40.800
You're like, I can't think about
tomorrow too deep because right now it's dinner

93
00:07:40.839 --> 00:07:44.519
time, right right. I love
that my therapist quickly, my therapist said

94
00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:46.639
one time, do what your dog
does. And it took me a while

95
00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:49.319
to get that, and then I'm
like, wow, my dog Blue is

96
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:53.480
always just in the moment, you
know, as dogs are. You know,

97
00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:56.600
they're not worried about you know,
tomorrow or next week or next month.

98
00:07:56.639 --> 00:07:59.079
They're worried about right this moment.
And I love that so true.

99
00:07:59.160 --> 00:08:01.680
Yeah, that's a good one.
That's a good one. Thank you so

100
00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:03.600
much, Sasha. I can't wait
for everybody to see The Crowded Room.

101
00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:07.439
It's such an incredible series. Thank
you for your time. Have a good

102
00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:16.839
day, Sasha Lynne. Really great
person, really good actor, really does

103
00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:22.600
an amazing job in the Crowded Room. Again, I can't say much.

104
00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:24.600
I feel like I'm being so mysterious, and I am, but it's for

105
00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:31.000
your benefit, I promise, all
right. Next up, Emmy Award winner,

106
00:08:31.399 --> 00:08:35.440
multiple Emmy Nams. She won four. Last year's The Breakout, of

107
00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:39.799
course, which we talked to her. I talked to her for She's been

108
00:08:39.840 --> 00:08:43.720
a MoMA, me, a mean
girls, all kinds of great films,

109
00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:50.440
and she is really amazing in this. I'm telling you there's gonna be Emmy

110
00:08:50.519 --> 00:08:56.399
Nams for this too. So without
further ado, let's talk with Amanda Cyphred.

111
00:08:56.679 --> 00:08:58.840
So, first of all, I
want to congratulate you on this.

112
00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:05.840
It is such an incredibly powerful,
thought provoking series and you do an amazing,

113
00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:09.919
amazing job in it. I absolutely
love it. I really do.

114
00:09:11.480 --> 00:09:16.080
Thanks, of course, So let
me ask for you. You know,

115
00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:20.919
a chunk of this series UM takes
place just you and Tom, you know,

116
00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:24.840
in a room almost like a play. Do you find that more challenging

117
00:09:24.919 --> 00:09:30.840
or less challenging than you know,
say something like Mama Mia or something where

118
00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:33.840
there's you know, all these people
kind of all around you for most of

119
00:09:33.879 --> 00:09:39.919
the project. It's it depends,
it depends, I guess. You know,

120
00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:43.440
when you're thinking about physicality, it's
a lot easier because you could just

121
00:09:43.559 --> 00:09:48.080
to sit back and in some ways
you're relaxed in a way that you wouldn't

122
00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:52.399
be when you're dancing around uh you
know, a cliff side. But I

123
00:09:54.240 --> 00:10:01.720
and the you know, the coordination
and the the that just that physical intensity

124
00:10:01.320 --> 00:10:05.960
can can be really fun and actually
make things easier. But in this,

125
00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:09.039
in this respect, it's kind of
like the meat. It's kind of like

126
00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:13.200
what I love about acting most is
that human connection. And when there's nothing

127
00:10:13.240 --> 00:10:20.759
around else to distract, you can
really get pretty deep and and it's and

128
00:10:20.799 --> 00:10:26.519
it's and it can get pretty silent
and pretty tense, and little nuances pop

129
00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:30.440
out in ways that you don't You
just don't see and you aren't affected by

130
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:35.279
when it's grand and super comedic,
and you know, it just depends on

131
00:10:35.320 --> 00:10:37.440
the genre, and depends on the
subject matter, and depends on the circumstances.

132
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:41.399
And in this in this sense,
I felt like we had so much

133
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:46.759
room to play in this interrogation room
and to build too. We built so

134
00:10:46.879 --> 00:10:50.120
much on the on these characters.
When they really started coming together and connecting

135
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:56.320
and and caring about each other and
trusting each other, was magical to shoot.

136
00:10:56.000 --> 00:11:00.200
I love that, And does that
I'm not an actor, so I

137
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:03.919
don't know, But does that scare
you? That vulnerability, that focus where

138
00:11:03.960 --> 00:11:07.279
it's just just the two of you. I know you said it excites you

139
00:11:07.320 --> 00:11:11.200
and all, but I feel like
for me that'd be terrified. Oh well,

140
00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:16.440
you're pretty stripped down. You know. It's just the bare minimum,

141
00:11:16.440 --> 00:11:22.320
and you know, the cameras are
close and they're just moving all around trying

142
00:11:22.320 --> 00:11:28.279
to trying to capture as much as
as they can. And I don't know,

143
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:31.200
it can be terrifying if you don't
like the person sitting opposite you.

144
00:11:31.320 --> 00:11:35.799
It can be it can be hard, it can be a struggle, But

145
00:11:35.799 --> 00:11:39.480
but it was It was fun because
we we had the same level of enthusiasm

146
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:45.039
for our characters and for the story
and for what was developing between us,

147
00:11:45.879 --> 00:11:48.919
and so it didn't it felt really
safe. Actually, I love that,

148
00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:54.240
and I think that's so important,
and I think it ends up showing in

149
00:11:54.440 --> 00:11:58.960
your work. It's it's really an
incredible series. I can't wait for everybody

150

to see The Crowded Room. Thank

154
00:12:22.720 --> 00:12:28.600

edge of your seat so good. It

155
00:12:28.759 --> 00:12:35.120

the whole soul and have been unable
to talk about it for a month.

00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:50.879
So let's talk about it. Hit

160
00:12:52.240 --> 00:12:56.399
